Mr.Jones The Observatory (Short Review)

Mr.Jones is quite small company, who is making cool and interesting looking timepieces in London (UK).

If astronomy is your thing, you might just want to own The Observatory watch by Mr Jones. Crispin Jones, Mr Jones founder, explains: “With this design I wanted to explore a different aesthetic – the photograph of the earth seen from space is printed as a four colour separation, something we’ve never tried before. It was a really special moment when we laid down the fourth colour and the image suddenly came to life!

“The exciting thing about doing production here in London is that it allows us to experiment with different techniques and processes, so we can really push the design side in new and unexpected ways”

The Observatory

The Observatory displays the time based on the position of the sun or moon around the earth. The time is read off the scale on the upper half of the face. The position of the sun indicates the hours from 6am until 6pm, while the moon represents the hours from 6pm through to 6am. The golden comet indicates the minutes as it orbits the earth.

The time display on The Observatory is based on the sun and moon type pocket watches that were first produced in England in the late 1600s. At this time there was a period of experimentation into how to represent the time, before the concentric hour and minute hands were established as the universal standard.

Overall I like the watch. It isn’t something you would wear everyday, because it’s hard to tell time, and you can’t tell it precise. But it’s a conversation piece, it looks really cool and the whole idea behind it is something I like. Every time I wear it, someone asks me about it. Only thing I would prefer is mechanical movement, but it’s just my preference. Still a great timepiece!

The watch was released in an edition of 100 pieces, with each watch numbered on the back of the watch case. But after success of that 100 piece run, they decided to make more, so now you can buy regular version too!
