Nocs Atelier Seconds Rose Gold (Review)

Best known for its premium audio wares, Swedish brand Nocs has expanded into the watch market with the launch of its new sub-division, Nocs Atelier.

“Seconds, the brand’s debut timepiece, blends top-grade materials with a minimalist design that meets at the convergence point of substance and style. Constructed almost entirely from matte black sandblasted steel, the only detail that diverges from this aesthetic palette is a metallic seconds hand, which is available in both silver and rose gold.”

The watch was released in the middle of November 2015, so it’s relatively new brand. I discovered it in some kind of hipster site where I was reading about Swedish design. And thought I should write them, because I couldn’t find anyone reviewing this watch. Plus I was keen to see how it looks in real life.

When I got the watch, I was surprised how small is the box. It was so minimalistic and compact. I thought I received something from IKEA! Everything was placed there very neatly.

There are two versions: “Rose Gold” and “Silver“. Both look the same, except the color of seconds hand. The case is made from 316L stainless steel,  40mm big, 9,4mm thick and lug width of 20mm. It’s simple looking and there are no spring bars, the case and the part where the strap goes are on piece, so the only straps you will get there are nato/zulu. The case is matte black pvd coated and it feels like very good quality coating. I accidentally knocked it by door knob and it didn’t even leave a mark on it. The watch is water resistant to 5ATM (50 meters) which is reasonable for light swim or washing hands. It has screw down case back which is also black pvd coated with engraving of company name and model name.

The dial is very simple, all matte black. With black hour markers, hour and minutes hands. The only hand that is in other color is seconds hand. This one is rose gold. The thing I don’t like is that it’s hard to see the time. The dial and hour, minute hands in medium light are basically invisible. I like how it looks, but I wouldn’t wear it daily. The crystal is mineral glass with AF coating on it.

I don’t know the particular movement as there are no information on their website. But it states that it’s 3 hand Japanese quartz movement with 4 year battery life. So I think by these stats that it’s one of the Miyota ones. It came with black nylon nato with pvd coated buckle. It is actually quite beautiful strap, I like the shape of buckle.

Overall I like the looks of the watch, and that seconds hand, but don’t like the dials readability. They really needed to make the hour, minute hands a bit lighter black or even grey-ish. It still would be minimalistic, but easier to read time. But if you are willing to sacrifice time for looks, then go for it. Because this will receive a lot of compliments from fellow design enthusiasts.
