I surfed the world wide web and saw this interesting watch brand “Oxygen”. They appear to be a Paris-based company and make some nice looking, mostly quartz (some auto), 10 ATM watches. They mostly come on Nato straps with the premise that it makes them more versatile because they can be changed so easily.
I like that they use classic styles, like Explorer and Submariner, but put design tweaks on them so that they aren’t exact copies. They also have some more original, but still classic designs. Most styles come in a variety of color variations. The price is OK, still affordable, but not cheap… I guess design costs, eh? But any case I wanted to see they’re watches for myself, so I dived in and got one in here for a review.
So today we are looking at the “Oxygen Legend Diver 42 Adriatic” in blue. I got the watch very fast, it arrived the next day I ordered it. The watch came in this decent looking cardboard box, you open the box and here you have the Adriatic. Immediately picking up the watch I noticed that the strap was very bad, like VERY BAD. It was stiff and had this cheap plastic smell. As soon as I noticed that I swapped it for a nice vintage leather strap from cheapestnatostraps.com.
The case is made from stainless steel and is 42mm in diameter. The case is brushed nicely and for the price has decent finishing. The bezel is unidirectional. Well, the bezel was a disappointment too. It grips very bad, the action on bezel was bad, it was very hard to turn. The bezel insert design is bad too, at least I don’t like. The star on 12 o’clock I think is pointless and gives the watch fashion styling. Crown isn’t screw down so that gives us only 10ATM (100m) water resistance, but the crown was easy to grip and had ok-ish action. The case back is screwed on. And on the back, you will find something interesting that I didn’t notice until I got the watch. This is limited edition. They will make only 888 of these divers, and I got the 26th. In many occasions, if the watch is limited edition it will rise in price, but this won’t be that case. It will actually drop in price by 40% as you take it out of the box. So I wouldn’t recommend buying it for just that reason. The crystal is mineral and it is very thick and gives the watch a vintage look. Actually, the crystal is the main reason why the watch looks a lot better, if it had a flat crystal it would look a lot cheaper.
The dial is blue with these big numbers and lume dots. The numbers, dots, and hands are lumed, but the lume is quite poor and it won’t last longer than 20min. For comparing my Seiko Monster lasts whole night and shines bright all night long. The hands are in silver. On 3 0’clock you will find the date. Overall the design/layout of the dial is good looking.
The movement is some kind of Japan quartz I think, but I wouldn’t be surprised that it has a China made movement. But it goes and works fine so I think it will be a decent workhorse. So as I said the quality of the strap is poor, so I changed it. The only decent thing about the strap was the buckle which had Oxygen logo on it. Lug width is 20mm. They actually did one smart thing that rarely other diver watches have. In the lugs where are the holes for the pins, you have to holes, so that means if you have a thicker strap, you can fit it without it rubbing against the case. That is actually very smart.
Overall the watch was a big disappointment. I actually knew that it wasn’t the best, but still wanted to test it, because I’m here to give honest reviews. So you know what you are buying. The watch has bad strap and bezel, maybe not the most important things as you can change the strap and bezel gets rarely used anyways. But if you buy a watch it needs to be good quality. Would I buy it? NO! I did not have a watch with so many flaws quite a long time. But if you don’t care about these things and you like how it looks, then buy it. As TGV said: “As long as the watch keeps you happy, buy it, no matter what it is” and I agree in some way, no matter what it is, a Patek or Daniel Wellington, as long as you like it, wear it and be happy.
