Today we are gonna take a look at another fashion watch brand, but this one is special because it has a nice design and it also features a real cork strap. The company is called Aight. The company is based in France, and all the watches are designed there. First with they made came out in the year 2013 and it had an interesting solution of the watch band. They used the slap bracelet (an iconic accessory from the 1980’s) to put the watch on the wrist. And last year (2017) they introduced this watch that we are taking a look at today.
The watch came in a white cardboard box with Aight branding. Inside the box, I was expecting some foam padding and the watch, but instead, the Aight Tokyo watch comes in a felt/leather pouch. I like when companies also include a travel pouch or case. It will really be helpful when you will travel with it. There was also some instruction manual, warranty and Aight sticker. I really liked the strap the watch has. I really like the cork texture.
The case of the watch is made from 316L stainless steel. The case has matte gunmetal colour finish. The case shape is round with very short lugs. The case diameter is 40mm, the thickness is 8,3mm. Lug to lug is 46mm and lug width is 20mm. The side is very nice for almost any wrist. Also, the watch is unisex. On the wrist, it sits close to the wrist as it isn’t so thick so there won’t be problems fitting it under the cuff. It is a nice daily watch for fashionable people. For people who aren’t interested in mechanics of the watch, but just like the looks. The finishing is done really nice, I can’t see any flaws and it doesn’t seem that it will scratch that easily too. At 3 o’clock we have a small push-pull crown which is signed. The crown is easy to grab and operate. The case back is snap on one. I prefer screw in style case backs more because it is a safer solution and also better looking. But this isn’t anything that makes the watch perform worse. The case back has polished finishing and has Aight logo and some specifications etched in. On top of the case, you will find a hardened slightly domed mineral crystal. I think the dome on the crystal makes the watch look a lot better than if it had the flat style crystal. The watch is rated at 5ATM (50m), but I wouldn’t swim with it, as I wouldn’t trust a snap on case back and push-pull crown to go for those depths. Maybe some light rain and handwash will be fine, but nothing more.
The dial is also in the same matte gunmetal colour as the case. The printed minute track and slightly raised hour markers are in black shiny colour. At 6 o’clock we have the small seconds subdial with gold ikepod style shape hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Aight logo in black. The hour and minute hands are in polished gold colour and also have that ikepod style shape to them. I really like the simplicity of the dial and I like the hand shape.
The movement inside is a Citizen Miyota quartz which is known for its cheap price and reliability. The battery life on these usually is 2,5-3 years. Now we have come to the most exciting part, the strap. In the past, I have looked at one cork watch strap and that was really nicely made. This one looks good, it has a nice texture, but I think it lacks the softness. The strap is pretty stiff and hardly bends to take your wrists shape. It will probably take 2 weeks to set in. But the cork is very practical material I think. As if you get it dirty, you can wash off the dirt and the strap looks like new again. Also, it will withstand water better than leather or fabric straps. And of course, it looks really cool. The strap also features the quick release spring bars. I rant about these things all the time, I think every company should use them, even the higher end ones. It just makes the strap change so easy and fast + you can’t scatch the watch with any spring bar tools. The buckle on this watch is a regular tang style one. The buckle is also in this gunmetal colour.
Overall the watch is pretty interesting, I think they should use this style and just add tons of colour choices for the straps and materials of the straps. In that way, they could get a bigger marketplace. Usually, the fashion people aren’t that interested in the case or design itself, they want the right colour, material strap. I also would like to see a sapphire glass on here, but then I guess it could get more expensive.
