Introducing Schaffen Watches – a Singapore start-up. So what makes their watches so special, and why are we taking a look at them?
Established by two brothers from Singapore, Schaffen began when Jonathan couldn’t find an ideal timepiece and embarked on a journey to build his own. His custom creation caught the eye of friends and family who asked him to make them bespoke watches as well. A year on and almost one hundred watches later, the brothers decided to officially launch the brand. In German, ‘Schaffen’ means ‘to create’. True to its name, this independent label continues to craft watches that not only tell time but speak of the wearer’s individuality.
Firstly, when you buy a watch from Schaffen, no two pieces are exactly the same ofcourse if you don’t order the pre-designed ones. Customers are able to design they’re own watch, while they can also personalize signatures, texts, dial numerals, dial color, strap color, font and many more.
As you can see from the screenshots, I created my own, customizing it to maximum so you could see what you can do with the watch creator.
The watch came in box where you will find another box. a rather interesting and eyecatching design. I’am one of those people who needs a good unboxing experience, I like when company gives attention to packaging. Of course the main thing is the watch, but box is a good plus.
The case is made from stainless steel (316L). The case is 40mm so wears very good. The bezel is polished, but the case seems to be bead blasted. The finishing overall is great. The caseback is engraved, you can choose to engrave text, but I decided to choose one of they’re design called “Marina Bay”. The caseback is also polished and is snap on. The crown is polished and is signed with “X” or just cross. Water resistance is only 30M or 3ATM. The height is only 7.1mm so it wears very thin also.
The dial I chose is the blue sunburst, with arabic railway numerals and faceted silver hands. Also I chose to signature my watch with my surname “Kaminsky”. You can choose between two fonts “Serif” or “Signature”. The uality of printing very nice. Everything is crisp. And the dial just pops in the sun light. The sunburst dial really likes to play with light.
Inside the watch you will find Swiss Ronda 762 Calibre Quartz. Which is reiable and you can find it in many watches at this price point or lower. It is a good choice, as the Ronda quartz movements have been proving they’re reliability through years. But My choice would be something hand wound or automatic. Like something from Miyota or Seiko, for the heck, even a Sea-Gull now has very good quality movements. Of course you sacrifice the slim size, but you can achieve it with Sea-Gull movements too.
The strap in my opinion feels cheap. It is genuine leather strap with aligator pattern. From the feeling it remind me ebay straps I bought couple of years ago for 1$. That’s the only thing that lacks quality and has to be upgraded. Watch also comes with a limited three-year warranty which actually surprised me, as most of the watches I reviewed has only 2 years.
Overall the watch is great looking, I like that you can design your own design. Materials and finishing quality is also great, but as I said you will need to swap strap for something better, and I could recomend cheapnatostraps.com new Kvarnsjö Leather strap collection. Also the price maybe is a bit high, but it is what you get for chance to choose the design and make your watch more personal.
